A brief history of palmistry
Palmistry, or chiromancy, is old and its origins are uncertain. Encyclopaedia Britannica notes it may have begun in ancient India and that it flourished again in the Renaissance. Smithsonian Magazine records the same possible Indian origin and notes that Aristotle linked the creases of the palm to length of life.
Its European heyday is better documented. Writing for the U.S. National Library of Medicine's Circulating Now, historian Lauren Kassell describes how chiromancy thrived in Renaissance Europe, with manuals circulating in manuscript from the fourteenth century and printed in growing numbers through the seventeenth. Johann Praetorius published one such work in 1661.
At the time it sat alongside astrology and physiognomy as a way of reading the body for character. That is still the most honest description of what a palm reading offers: an old, formal language for talking about who someone is.
