Where tarot comes from
Tarot began as a card game in Renaissance Italy. Britannica dates the first decks to the 1430s, and Smithsonian Magazine calls the Visconti-Sforza decks the earliest blueprint for modern tarot. The Sola Busca deck of the late 1400s is the earliest complete 78-card deck that survives.
The idea that the cards held hidden meaning came much later. Antoine Court de Gébelin's Le Monde Primitif, published between 1773 and 1782, first suggested tarot was more than a game. In the early twentieth century the artist Pamela Colman Smith designed the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, with its Lovers card dated 1909, and tarot lived on as an occult practice in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, as a second Smithsonian report explains.
Tarot is far from a fringe interest today. A 2025 Pew Research Center survey found that 11% of U.S. adults consult tarot cards at least once a year, and most say they do it for fun. Only 1% say they rely on such practices a lot for major decisions, which is a healthy balance to keep.
